Palm Pre comes to Europe
Expected Q4 2009 7th July 2009
The US version of the pre_available_from_sprint_webos_1_0_2_updates_released.html’ title=’Palm Pre Available from Sprint, WebOS 1.0.2 Updates Released’>Palm Pre has been one of this year’s hottest sellers stateside. European customers have been anticipating the launching of a GSM edition in Europe for some meter, and Palm have now announced that they ar partnering with Telefónica to bring the Pre to the UK, Germany and Ireland (under the O2 brand) and Kingdom of Spain (under the Movistar steel).
The Pre’s key merchandising proposal is the new webOS operating organization which allows true multitasking in a novel port that is designed to shuffle managing multiple applications as easy as possible. In terms of technological "wow gene", the Pre is one of the few handsets that can compete head-to-drumhead with the new iPhone 3G S.
Most of the specifications are unchanged from the US version of the Pre, but this ace is a GSM gimmick with support for UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (3.5G) data, in summation to wireless local area network.
The Pre also has GPS, a 3.1" 320 x 480 pel touchscreen display, a 3 megapixel camera with flash, a criterion 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Internal memory is 8GB (7GB is available to the drug user), but this is not expandable. We won’t repetition all the specifications from the master, but boilersuit this is a very attractive package.
The glide-out keyboard is a QWERTY one in the UK, Hibernia and Spain. In Germany the Pre will come with a QWERTZ keyboard instead. Reviews of the master Pre indicate that the keyboard is best ignored in any cause.
As far as we tin tell, the European Pre is cosmetically identical to the US ace. The briny difference that we tin see in the pressure photos is an "H" in the top right field corner of the screen indicating an HSDPA connection – in the US you would typically see "EVDO" instead.
We mentioned the iPhone, and although we would say that the Pre is a direct rival, the iPhone has different strengths and weaknesses. In the briny, we would say that the iPhone’s huge kitchen range of applications is something that the Pre tin simply not match. But the worldliness of the Pre’s operating organization is far in procession of the iPhone. In accuracy, both handsets ar very goodness indeed, although both rich person their flaws.
Given that the Pre is a direct rival to the iPhone, it’s a number annoying to find that in the UK both the iPhone and Pre ar only available on the O2 meshing. Obviously, that’s good newsworthiness for O2 though!
There’s no steering on price, but we expect the Pre to be quite expensive. Palm and Telefónica say that the Pre should be in European shops by Christmas this year.
