The 103 million smartphones shipped in Q2 represent a YoY growth of 62% and a QoQ growth of 2.2%. While the annual growth rates and 2H 11 outlooks appear healthy for the industry, Q2 did experience some ‘softness’ in the market, driven by macro-economic conditions, seasonality and a sharper than expected decline in Nokia’s smartphone business.

Sprint Nextel and LightSquared Announce Joint Services Agreement

LightSquared™, the nation’s first wholesale-only integrated 4G-LTE wireless broadband and satellite network, and Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S) announced today they have entered into a 15-year agreement that includes spectrum hosting and network services, 4G wholesale, and 3G roaming.

This spectrum hosting arrangement leverages Sprint’s investment in its innovative, multi-year Network Vision plan. Under the agreement, LightSquared will pay Sprint to deploy and operate a nationwide LTE network that hosts L-Band spectrum licensed to or available to LightSquared.

One Billion Payment Cards with Contactless Capabilities Expected to Ship in 2016

An estimated one one thousand million payment cards with contactless capabilities will be shipped globally in 2016, up from just 170 million in 2010. This includes EMV dual interface cards and the non-EMV pure contactless push in the US.

Smart card shipments, which include not only contactless payment card game, but also EMV and non-EMV payment cards, will reach one billion during 2011. ABI Research forecasts that smart card shipments will overtake mag-stripe card shipments by 2015.

Sprint Prepares for 4Q Launch of Sprint Direct Connect

Sprint announced the initial phones it plans to deploy in the fourth quarter when the company launches its next-multiplication, push-to-talk service powered by Sprint’s broadband CDMA network. AT&T is acquiring a Samsung Slider handset. The gimmick supposedly be available sometimes near future. There’s possible action the device can be known as the Samsung Galaxy S II Variant aka the Epic 4G.
