Juniper Research forecasts a rapid uptake of LTE mobile broadband technology in the next five years but with a very limited global reach. Subscriber levels will attain 428m by 2016 but will only reaching 6% of the global subscriber population. Most of this growth is expected to occur from 2012 onwards, with many mobile operators making preparations now in order to realise their roll out targets.

The new 4G LTE Opportunities report from Juniper Research found that with the rate of LTE network commitments at an all-time high, network vendors have significantly improved their position to offer products and solutions to network operators. Consequently, the total number of LTE base station deployments will reach almost 1 million by 2014.

Consumers to Overtake Enterprise by 2015

In the early years LTE will be dominated by the uptake of enterprise subscribers, but during 2013 consumer subscribers will begin to sign up in volume and begin to overtake enterprise subscribers by 2015.

Report author Nitin Bhas added: “With LTE being offered as a bounty floor service initially, enterprise subscribers will be attracted by the improved data speeds and the service guarantees that will be offered. The emerging factor that volition drive consumer takings-up later in the forecast and beyond is the embedding of LTE technology in consumer devices.”

Tablets and Smartphone to Dominate

The report found that LTE smartphones and tablets will dominate the LTE connected end user device market, accounting for 50% of the total LTE subscribers by 2016. LTE smartphones are expected to achieve early market traction in the enterprise marketplace, with high-end information users migrating to the faster technology. Juniper also notes that endeavor users are leading the early stages of LTE-enabled tablet adoption; however, we expect consumer users to exceed enterprise users by volume from 2013.

A new report by analyst firm Juniper Research forecasts that pill shipments will reach 253 million by 2016, nearly a five-fold increase from the 55.2 million tablets the company expects to reach the market in 2011. With a second generation of Apple’s iPad hitting the market earlier this class, other smartphone vendors have followed suit: HTC, LG, Motorola and RIM launched first generation models in 2011. As other opportunities elsewhere in the PC market diminish, leading players from this quad — including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Toshiba — ar also joining the fray.

Over half of annual Tablet shipments will have cellular connections by 2016

Shipments of tablets with additional cellular connectivity are currently much lower than those with only WiFi network access, but Juniper forecasts the balance will shift significantly. Network access will play a key role; 4G networks in developed markets will enable richer services over cellular connections, and the lack of fixed-line infrastructure in emerging markets will shuffle cellular connections a must-have as tablets are adopted regionally. Report author Daniel Ashdown adds that operator retail strategy also has a part to play: ‘Multi-device plans (for a smartphone and a tablet) will overcome the problem of consumers not wanting to pay another subscription.’

Mobile is ‘the new black’ as PC vendors join the tablet market

Microsoft’s official announcement that its Windows 8 OS will be orientated for tablets strongly indicates that mobile — in particular smartphones and tablets — is the fastest growth space in consumer engineering. Microsoft’s Office suite will also add to the attraction of tablets within the enterprise quad. Juniper’s report forecasts that nearly a fifth of annual tablet shipments will reach the enterprise space by 2016, as business continues to realise the potential of the device for content creation.

The whitepaper ‘Tablets, Viva La Evolution!’ and further details of the survey, ‘Tablet & eReader Evolution: Strategies & Opportunities 2011-2016′ are available at www.juniperresearch.com.
